For: Opening F.O.1 Despite being a persistent object of scorn, identity politics is not an all-powerful trump card. It has served and continues to serve a vital role in helping us shape our understanding of, and the solutions to, the problems faced by marginalized people. What’s more, it’s part of the inexorable trek toward advancing universal human rights. When stripped of the rhetoric, it’s a necessary, pragmatic first step. Identity politics, like any other human construct, is imperfect and subject to pitfalls, but ultimately provides both strength and a voice for marginalized groups to better advance their rights as people, thereby exerting a net positive force in society.
